What you need to see it

Red-light torch (essential). Preserves your dark adaptation, which takes about 20 minutes.
Warm clothes and shoes for walking at night (essential). In dark countryside or mountain areas, temperatures drop a lot.
Camera with a fast wide-angle lens and a tripod (recommended). For photographing the Milky Way's core with exposures of several seconds.
Tracking mount (optional). Allows longer exposures without the stars trailing.

Where to see it best

What matters most here is how dark the sky is, and we don't have a reliable point-by-point measurement yet. That is why we don't rank towns: a big city would score as well as a dark remote spot. Use the night lights layer to get away from light pollution.
